Lesson Notes - Systems of Power (Gender & Sex)

Admin
  1. Collect your semester proposals- I thought about it and I'm going to be much more lenient about the type of project I will allow. It doesn't necessarily have to be structured as some kind of research project with issues of representativeness, etc.
  2. As you can see your blog post has gone back to the way it used to look...
  3. Grading your blog posts-- I will update your grades in Bb tomorrow.
  4. Notice that the dummy posts for your author names are gone. The authors post numbers are now accurate; this is how many posts you've made.
  5. Adjustment to post labels requirement
    • if you're making a blog post about our readings, one of your labels should be "Readings Post"
    • also add "Blog Post #1" or "Blog Post #2" as a label (please go back and edit your post to add this label)
    • finally, if your post is about the excursion, use "Excursion Post"
  6. Pass out leadership assignment (not optional!)
  7. I think I will also add another survey over break-- asking for your feedback about this class-- what is working out, what is not, what you think we should do, etc...(will be due by end of spring break)
Some thoughts some of your blog posts
Final comment about last week's readings before going to this week's readings. Why do you think women have so little wealth? The article last week tied that cause to the cumulative affects of historical exploitation and capitalism.
  • What would you all like to see happen?
  • What things do you think we could help women?
Today's Readings - Systems of Power (Gender and Sex) (a few minutes for each person who posted to say something)
  • 19. "The Myth of the Latin Woman: I Just Met a Girl Named Maria," by Judith Ortiz Cofer. (student post)
  • 20. "Becoming Entrepreneurs: Intersections of Race, Class, and Gender at the Black Beauty Salon," by Adia M. Harvey. (student post)
  • 21. "The Well-Coiffed Man: Class, Race, and Heterosexual Masculinity in the Hair Salon," by Kristen Barber. (student post)
  • 22. "The Culture of Black Femininity and School Success," by Carla O'Connor, R. L'Heureux Lewis, and Jennifer Mueller.
Some Questions
  1. Do any of you think we're anti-men? Anti-male?
  2. Last week we focused on Systems of Power (Race and Class). This week, we're looking at Systems of Power (Gender and Sex). What do we mean by referring to these as "systems of power"?
  3. How many of you could identify with Judith Ortiz Cofer's work? Do you think her experiences extend to other women of color? And men of color?
  4. What is the conundrum for black women and hair salons?
  5. How is Kristen Barber's article about "systems of power"?
  6. How is O'Connor et. al.'s article about "systems of power"?
