Stereotype of Latinos in Hollywood

Hollywood is a well known place, where most people want to reach fame for their acting skills. However, it is not the easy to reach it. I have seen some movies where Latinos are stereotyped as gang members, thieves, or maids. To make it to Hollywood is not easy, especially if you are Hispanic. Latino/Latina would be given small roles, but it is usually the same thing as janitor or maid. It is what Hollywood portrays the Latino community in America, but not all of us is like that. Therefore, the audience would get that perspective of us. As a Latina, it bothers me a lot that we are portrayed as maids when there are maids with different backgrounds. There are Latinos in America that are lawyers, teachers, accountants, and so on. for example, Sonia Sotomayor is the first Latina to be a judge in the Supreme court.

The last Oscar  was very controversial because during the part of the "In the Memoriam" when a lot of Hollywood actors, musicians, producers, directors and etc. are remembered were not shown. In this part the actress Lupe Ontiveros, was not in the telecast, and some other actors because there was no time for all of them, so the ones that did not make it were put online. Lupe Ontiveros in most of her movies she portrayed a maid, "I'm proud to represent those hands that labor in this country. I've given every maid I've ever portrayed soul and heart.". (New York Times) Lupe Ontiveros said it to the New York Times in 2002. Latinos and Latinas actors should be given  diverse acting roles, but not always the same thing as criminals or maids. It should be diverse.
