Two years ago, I used to do my own hair at home for a very cheap price because it was natural. Back in the days all I needed was some shampoo, some conditioner and some treatment which I applied just by reading the simple instructions listed on their bottles. Now ever since I permed my hair, I am compelled to do what it takes to keep them as nice as possible because people in our society give great importance to our look. When I was going on the hair salon excursion, I actually wondered what will I possibly learn from an assignment like this. I actually come across many things that I never paid attention to. Discrimination against women is a huge topic to address when it comes to doing hair.
The first place I went to is GG beauty plus hair and nail salon located in Queens. I asked the barber what is the difference in price for a haircut for men and women and boys and girls. He gave me a list on which a haircut for men men and women cost thirteen dollars and a hair cut for boys cost eight dollars. I then noticed that there was no price listed for girl's haircut. I was curious to know why it was not listed. I asked him why it was not on the list. "Girls generally do not get haircut. Their parents usually bring them over to wash or perm their hair" he replied. I asked him to estimate the price anyway. He told me it would cost ten which is two dollars more than the boys' price. What kind of nonsense is that? Girls should not have to pay more to cut their hair. Is the barber saying that girls should not get haircut because they will look like boys if they do. Is he sending us a message that girls with long hair are the one who fit within the norms of our society.
The second place I visited is called Myra Dominican hair salon. It is located in the Bronx. Women pay twenty five dollars for their haircut and men only pay eighteen dollars. The third place I visited is located in Long Island. The name of this place is Esperansa's beauty salon. This place is the most expensive of all. Women's haircut is thirty dollars and men's haircut is twenty five. Women's haircut can get more expensive depending on the length of the hair and how much they want to cut.
The differences in prices could be do to the fact that many hairstylists think that women have more hair than men, therefore it takes longer to cut the hair. If that is the case what about men that have long hair like women. I personally know a man that has very long hair and yet he still get his haircut for twenty five dollars at Esperansa's hair salon. Another reason for price differences could be due to the location of the salon. Generally, hair services in places like Long Island ,which are a predominantly white places, are usually more expensive than any other places. The prices also vary due to the way the business is structured. The customer service in each hair salon is unique and different. The best services I have received is from GG beauty plus hair and nail salon. I really like this place because the hairstylists take their time to do my hair without rushing to get to the next customer. This place also does hair at a reasonable price that I can afford.
I think it is very unfair to discriminate against women like that. We are all human beings and we all have hair made with the same biological components. Women should not have to pay more to get haircut. This is ridiculous. There should be laws that prevent differences in prices for services like this.
