Islanders Game Drinks of Choice: Wine for Women and Beer for Men

Yesterday I was getting ready for work and heard an interesting commercial on the radio. The commercial was advertising a “Ladies Night Out” for Tonight’s Islanders game. The Ladies Night Out” package includes two seats plus two glasses of wine. I thought it strange that the deal specified two glasses of wine instead of two drinks. Then I thought about the majority of the people who attend hockey games: men. If they pitched wine to women then maybe women would be more likely to attend a hockey game and bring her girlfriends. I was curious and decided to look up the deal on the Islanders website only to find out that they also advertise a “Guys Night Out”. Guess what kind of drinks the “Guys Night Out” package includes! Beers of course!

Finding out about these two "Night Out" packages made me think about what’s happening in our society. We have stereotyped men and women down to the alcohol they drink. I like my wine, but when I want a beer should I reconsider my choice because it’s too manly? Who even drinks wine at a hockey game anyway? Is hockey such a manly sport that they think the only way to get women to enjoy a game is by bribing them with wine?

Excuse my ranting questions, but is this what society’s come to? Sports players are male as well as most of their fans. Is it such a foreign concept for a woman to enjoy sports? I leave you with these thoughts: Will it ever be socially acceptable for women to attend sports events without a man thinking she has no clue what’s going on in the game? Can women go to a hockey game and select a drink of her choice, perhaps a beer or scotch on the rocks? Will there ever be a time when stereotypes of male and female no longer exist?

  1. I heard the same thing!! Thank you for ranting, I felt the same way. I love wine, but found that advertisement offensive and sexist.
