Macy's 34th Street

My Excursion project led me to New York City's famous Macy's on 34th Street in the heart of NYC, Manhattan. I choose Macy's because of its wide variety of merchandise. From shoes and sneakers to blouses and button ups the options of upgrading ones wardrobes are endless. When comparing the prices from Men's and Women's clothing i found that only in certain brands, merchandise had a significant rise or drop in price. Here are my findings for Adult jeans by way of brand.

The jeans varied in prices through out the different brands, for jeans that had similar patterns and styles such as boot cut, slim fit, skinny jeans, etc within the same brand, the price differences between men's and women's were different but not by much. The Sections were  primarily women shopping in groups of two’s and three’s in the women section with a handful accompanied by a male. While the men's section was still primarily made up of women shoppers with a sprinkle of men unaccompanied. Their ages ranged from about mid twenties to elderly and many seemed as though they could have of been tourists due to the bags and fanny packs that were in plain sight and the section of Manhattan i was in. Couples shopping in the men's section for some reason were for the most part older in age. As far as staff goes, the usual aggressive Macy's personnel were present. Asking if i needed help every 10 minutes, and spraying me with fragrances quicker then i could say no thank you.

It was different scene walking into the children's section. Prices were pretty even although there was a lack of t-shirts and jeans within girls section. The section is mostly made up of dresses though out the entire children's section. My first thought was that this could be due to the change in seasons. But as I shopped longer I realized that certain items sold for boys were not sold girls. Within the children's section such items as athletic clothing was made available for boys by Nike, Adidas, and under armor, but no sporty cloths for girls. As I realized this my search for little girls athletic clothing continued but the search ended unsuccessfully. Here are my price findings within the children's section.

The children's section is a little more diverse still primarily women but there are quite more men with their children as well. Ages seemed to have ranged from as young as a new born to elderly. Mostly adults with their children. I received a lot of unwelcome looks, and stares but i knew there was a possibility of this happening especially because i was not accompanied by a child or my significant other. I guess a man hanging out in the children's section who really isn't buying anything tends to set off alarms in peoples heads. This is understandable, i can relate to a parents thought process when I'm in a crowded places with my nephews.

Prices for children's clothes, Whether boy or girl ranged below the fifty dollar mark respectively, although the selection was not quite as universal as the adult section. In my search to make sure i did not miss the section of little girls athletic gear, i choose to research online to see if Macy's was in fact advertising and selling this type of clothing for little girls. That search concluded that they did in fact sell gym attire for little girls. I find it truly strange that when walking into the boys section of the Macy's that  an entire section of clothing and displays has been dedicated to athletic gear and within the girls section the emphasis on spring dresses. Whether or not i missed the girls section of athletic gear, it was quite obvious that the importance of little girls athletic gear was not a top priority of the Macy's visual advertising team.

The world of Athletics should be emphasized equally to both genders, the benefits from exercise and fitness for young children can change their futures tremendously. It is a good source of stress relief and keeps us healthy. So why is it easily made accessible to boys and not girls? Why should i have to search for a girls Athletic gear within the girls section and it be forced down my throat within boys section? this only feeds into the problems of the inequality and misrepresentation of women today.
